What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that can be found in all age groups and usually begins in childhood. It involves inflammation of the bronchial walls that can lead to periods of wheezing, coughing and chest tightness.

Symptoms can vary, depending on the type of asthma. Some people are only affected by the disease when exposed to an irritant, while others may have regular asthmatic episodes.

Asthmatic

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder that involves inflammation of the airways (bronchi). The disease causes swelling and narrowing of the airways, and production of excess mucus. This thick secretion restricts the flow of air and triggers coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Asthma may be triggered by allergens (things that cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals) or by irritants (things that cause inflammation). Examples of allergens are pollen, dust mites and pet dander.

Irritants include tobacco smoke, fumes, chemical fumes and certain pesticides.

Treatment for asthma depends on the severity of symptoms. Symptoms are usually controlled with a bronchodilator or other medications.

Asthma symptoms

When you have asthma, your lungs get irritated and the lining of your airways gets red and swollen. The bronchial tubes also get filled with sticky mucus.

The symptoms of asthma can vary from day to day. They may be mild to very severe.

Your doctor will take a history to find out what is causing your symptoms. Then, tests will be done to find out more about your breathing and allergies.

A peak flow meter will be used to find out how well your lungs are working. If your peak flow is less than 50% of your personal best, you may have a flare up.

Your doctor will prescribe medicines to control your asthma. These will help you to stay healthy and live an active life.

Asthma with bronchitis

Asthma is a condition in which the airways become inflamed, making it harder for the body to breathe. This causes symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness.

Bronchitis is a common lung infection that may last for a few weeks or months. It can be caused by a virus and is usually worse in people who smoke or have a family history of bronchitis.

The main treatment for bronchitis is to relieve the inflammation and open up the airways. This is often done by using a bronchodilator (pronounced: brong-ko-DY-lay-ter) or an inhaler.

Chronic bronchitis is a more serious condition that can last for years, and it may require different medications. These include inhalers and tablets to control symptoms and prevent further airway narrowing, and a breathing exercise program called pulmonary rehabilitation.

Asthma treatment

People with asthma are usually prescribed medications to control their symptoms and reduce the number of attacks. They also learn how to use these medications and how to avoid triggers that cause them to have an attack.

There are several different patterns of asthma: Some have intermittent episodes of varying severity that are often triggered by viral respiratory infections (common colds). Others have a pattern of daily or very frequently recurring symptoms, which are more variable in severity but usually include recurrent coughing and labored breathing with exertion.

Treatment of asthma depends on the type of asthma and its underlying causes. Allergens, inhaled irritants and environmental triggers play important roles in the development of asthma.
